A Week Without Analytics

What changed when a small publication stopped looking at traffic dashboards for seven days.

A Week Without Analytics
On this page

The first day felt strangely quiet. Without the usual traffic dashboard, there was no immediate score for a newly published piece.

By the third day, editorial discussion had changed. Instead of asking which article was “winning,” we were talking about which piece deserved a follow-up and which reader questions kept appearing in replies.

The experiment did not prove that analytics are unnecessary. It did show how quickly a metric can become a proxy for editorial judgment when it is always visible.

We turned analytics back on. We also removed the real-time dashboard from our default workspace.

Field Notes are intentionally short: one observation, enough context to be useful, and no attempt to inflate it into an essay.
